Thanksgiving family tree

This is a fun project for Thanksgiving or Fall decor.  The leaves have ribbon loops and name tags sewn on so that each family member can take their leaves home and string on a ribbon as a lasting memory of family gatherings.

Materials:

  • small pieces of fabric in different colors
  • felt
  • embroidery floss
  • fabric paper
  • ribbon
  • small buttons

Step 1.

Trace leaves onto paper using stencil.  Pin paper to fabric and cut out.  Repeat this step with felt cutting these slightly bigger so that the felt shows when you stitch the leaf on.

Step 2.

Place fabric leaf on top of felt leaf and stitch using a running stitch as shown.

Step 3.

Print up names of family members using a sheet of fabric paper.  Cut out names and stitch to leaves.  Add a fabric loop and button as shown.

I plan to give my kids their family leaves on Thanksgiving so they can take them home and use them as a decoration next year. You can thread a piece of ribbon through the fabric loops and make a garland, stitch them onto placemats, hang them on your Christmas tree or frame them. You could also use them on scrapbook pages with pictures from your family gathering.

About Elaine Kazinec

I have never met anyone who can't make wonderful things for their homes, friends, and family, only those who think they can't. The purpose of this blog is to show everyone how really simple most projects for the home are to make. When my husband and I bought our first home we were short on cash so I learned to be long on creativity. I have been told that I can make something wonderful out of nothing and that is true. You can too! Some of my favorite things are items that I found in someone's junk pile. I am going to show you how easy it really is. I hope you find the courage to jump in and attempt some of these projects. You will be amazed at how talented you really are.
